An Interview with the Author

Welcome to Character Madness and Musings, tell us about your newest book.
Two Thousand Lines, based in three separate timelines in Louisiana, is about a woman who finds her way through abuse and learning to be loved. I am also releasing (same day) a children’s book, Grasshopper Eye and the Lost Vial, that is mentioned in Two Thousand Lines. My husband created the doodles that are featured in it and I’m extremely excited about both books!
Writing isn’t easy. What was the most difficult thing you dealt with when writing your book?
Crying. I cry a lot when I write, probably because the emotions in my novel are truly real to me.
Tell us about your writing career.
Looking back I realize now that it was a series of events that led me here. I’ve been writing since I was young. Poems that I wrote about my husband as a teenager are featured in my first novel The Funeral Flower. After a severe auto accident in 2011 I lost my business. That started the events that led me down this road. I have since rebuilt my business, however writing takes top priority and I love it!
They say Hind-sight is 20/20. If you could give advice to the writer you were the first time you sat down to write, what would it be?
Don’t hold back. Talk about it all. Life is tragic and life is great, don’t discount any of it!
What was your most difficult scene to write?
So many! I think both when Lisa and Taylor are telling their stories; also when Olivia is telling hers to Luke.
Are themes a big part of your stories, or not so much?
Yes, I think themes are big for me: healing. Loving, forgiving, and overcoming. I definitely focus on key factors in each character and novel. Some reviews say that I talk about too many types of issues within one book and they think I should focus on one at a time; however that isn’t real to me. That isn’t life. None of us have just one problem or have others in our lives without problems of their own. Truth of it is we have to navigate our own as well as those around us in order to have compassion and live together.
What are you working on now?
I am working on the rest of the young children’s book series. It is called the Hollows on the Bayou Series and includes six books that focus on social issues for children. Also, I am working on the next novel, of course!
Is there a release date planned?
The rest of the children’s series will be released throughout next year and the next novel is tentatively set for August 22, 2020.
Who is your favorite character from your own stories, and why?
Many of the characters are like family or close friends. I have a connection with each one, especially because it is true that one writes what one knows. However, if I had to pick one from Two Thousand Lines, it is Mary Margaret. I may just have to write her story one day.
Most writers were readers as children. What was your favorite book in grade school?
I don’t remember any particular book from grade school. I read a lot at night and remember it was such a special time for me. I looked forward to it all day.
What are your plans for future projects?
I have ten novels total (and of course continue to write new material). Each of the main ones are roughed out, so my plans are to simply take it one at a time.
Is there anything you would like to add before we finish?
I really want to say to everyone: be yourself. Find what you like. Find who you are. Then, don’t waver. Love, forgive, and live.

Michelle Jester lives in Greenwell Springs, Louisiana with her husband, high school sweetheart and retired Master Sergeant. Together they have a son and daughter. She is a hopeless romantic and has been writing poems and stories for as long as she can remember.One of her prize possessions is a bracelet with only a yellow, Rubber Duckie charm on it; which she wears every day to remind her to enjoy the fun and happy things of life!
