An Interview with the Author

Rachel M. Raithby

Have you always had a passion for writing?
I’ve always had a passion for reading, but writing started as an escape for me when I was trapped in a bad situation, I could see no end too. The stories I wrote gave me a break from reality and the strength to get through.

Are any of your characters inspired by real people?
No, I think my characters are created from the experiences and feelings I have inside me. My characters appear fully formed in my head, ready to tell their story.

Do you know where your stories are going from the start or do you go on the journey as much as the reader does?

Sometimes, it all depends on the character. Lexia came to me half way through the story, whereas the Winter Wolf, unfolded from the beginning. I don’t plot my stories they come to me in stages. I often know the ending or general story line but not every detail. My characters like to add in plot twists I didn’t see coming!

How long did it take you to write a novel?

It all depends on the book and life. I’m a single mama to 4 so writing time can be short! In saying that I can often get 7 to 10 k words down on a Saturday when my kids are with their grandparents. This year I’ve written two books and have two more started.

What are your upcoming projects? which has you most excited and why?

I’m currently working on two books. One is Wolf Queen the last book in the New Dawn Novels. I’m excited for the storyline to come to a head, but also sad that it’s ending. Kat and the gang have a special place in my heart and I’m going to miss being in their world.

The second book is something completely different and in another genre. There is no fantasy elements and it’s a story that touches on domestic violence. The two main characters are very broken, and we’ll follow them as they heal. This story is very personal to me and has experiences and emotions I’ve dealt with myself. It is a hard story for me to write but one I need to.

Are you strictly a Paranormal author or will we see different genres from you in the future?
I love paranormal and fantasy, but as above I’m also writing in none fantasy genres too.

Does what you are reading influence your writing and what are some of your favourite authors/books?

I have trouble writing when I’m reading, when I start a book it consumes my every thought, so I tend to read a book when I don’t feel the need to write. I love all things paranormal and fantasy when it comes to reading, but I do pick up the odd contemporary romance. My favorite books are the Psy-Changling Series by Nalini Singh, I can’t pick my fav out of that series they just keep getting better!

What are the biggest challenges you have come across as an author?
Finding time to write in between looking after 4 kids. Self doubt. Marketing!

How do you stay motivated and avoid writers block?

Sometimes I need a break, I will just pick up a book and read or take a few weeks off, I think it’s best not to stress, the story will come to you when its ready!

Do you listen to music while you write?

Not often the only song I’ve listened too is Imagine Dragons Radio Active, over and over whilst I write fighting scenes. I like silence, not that I get it very often!

Thanks so much for having me over today!

Thank you for stopping by.
