Three Factors Driving Thorne in UMBRA
By Christina Bauer
As part of the launch tour for my new book, UMBRA, the lovely folks at Character Madness and Musings asked me to share what drives the character of Thorne in UMBRA.
So without further ado, here are the top three factors!
Factor Number Three. A Prince Of No Consequence
The biggest factor driving Thorne is that his entire family have power over sentient. These are minute cybernetic organisms that look like tiny particles. Sentient live inside a host’s body and give them quantum abilities (think high-tech magic). Basically, intergalactic royalty in this book need sentient magic to be taken seriously, and Thorne has little sentient power. As a result, he’s treated like an unworthy royal. Thorne takes huge risks to prove that he still has value. Basically, our guy has got a bit of a death wish when the book opens.
Factor Number Two. Putting the Fun in DysFUNctional Family
What do you do when someone you love acts in the wrong ways … but for all the right reasons? Thorne’s father became Emperor of the Omniverse because the previous ruler was committing mass genocide. But the job of Emperor means taking in Crown Sentient, and those eat away at your mind. Thorne and his brothers try to make the best of a tough situation, but it isn’t easy to watch a parent lose themselves. This also contributes to Thorne’s risk-taking behavior (see factor number three).
Factor Number One. Love Supports Life
Thorne then meets a lady who loves him (can’t say more without spoilers) and that changes everything. He realizes that if he has enough value to inspire love from someone else, then maybe he should try liking himself as well. UMBRA is written in Thorne’s voice, and it was very satisfying to write from a guy’s perspective about the transformative power of love.
So there you have it; three factors that drive the character of Thorne in UMBRA! I had fun making this list and I hope to return on a future tour!
We'll be waiting for your next book.
Author Bio:
Christina Bauer thinks that fantasy books are like bacon: they just make life better. All of which is why she writes romance novels that feature demons, dragons, wizards, witches, elves, elementals, and a bunch of random stuff that she brainstorms while riding the Boston T. Oh, and she includes lots of humor and kick-ass chicks, too.
Christina graduated from Syracuse University’s Newhouse School with BA’s in English along with Television, Radio, and Film Production. She lives in Newton, MA with her husband, son, and semi-insane golden retriever, Ruby.
