On the island of Bellona, they worship the sun. Seventeen-year-old Veda understands that keeping the sun content ensures plentiful crops, peace and harmony, and a thriving economy. But as a member of the Basso class, she never reaps those benefits.

Life as a Basso is one fraught with back-breaking work and imposing rules. Her close friendship with Nico is Veda’s one saving grace in a cruel world where the division between her people and the ruling Dogio is as wide and winding as the canals that snake through their island.

But when Veda’s grandfather is chosen as the next sacrificial offering to keep the sun’s favor, Veda is forced to see the injustice of her world. Turning away from the sun means she must join the night—and an underground revolution she’s been taught to fear all her life.

What drives Veda?

by Jessika Fleck

Oh Veda… She’s a complex main character with a lot of family drama and personal baggage (much of which she has no idea exists until it’s too late). Despite she’s instinctually wary and guards her emotions with a pretty high wall, she has a heart of pure gold. If she could keep the entire island with fresh fish to eat, she would and wouldn’t think twice. Veda would also do anything for her grandfather whom she’s so very close to.

But what drives Veda? Hope. The hope for a better life… A better tomorrow… Fair treatment… And she’s not one to desire unrealistic results or unattainable dreams—Veda is fairly skeptical and a lot logical. She’d be satisfied with baby-steps of improvement for her fellow Basso. As long as they’re steady and continue to a fair end goal. And she’ll work for it too. Veda will slowly find she’s a warrior on the inside and this discovery will bolster her hope in reaching better conditions her society. And when all hope is lost, the love she has for her family and island will keep her afloat and eventually giver her what she needs to carry on.

Veda is also driven by her search for truth. As her family’s background slowly unfolds and she discovers the betrayal that’s cast her entire life in shadows, Veda longs for TRUTH. And she’ll do what she needs to get it (sometimes to the detriment of her best judgement).

But top of the list of driving factors for Veda is her grandfather, Poppy. He’s a constant source of safety and power and grounding for her. Most of her decisions (not all because sometimes Veda acts without a lot of forethought) reflect her grandfather’s philosophy for fishing and life: Wait… Listen… A definite theme throughout the book.
