This sweet, funny holiday romance from the author of Romeo And What’s Her Name features cute boys, plenty of rom-com mishaps, and a determined heroine readers are certain to fall for.
Charlotte “Charlie” Donovan knows exactly what she wants for Christmas: Teo Ortiz. He’s a star athlete, a National Honor Society member, and the most popular guy in school. Plus he contributes to the school paper, where Charlie is a co-editor. Basically, he’s exactly the type of guy Charlie’s looking for. The only problem is—he barely knows she exists.
But Charlie has a plan: rig the paper’s Secret Santa and win his heart with the perfect gift. The catch? She has no idea what to get him. Enter J.D. Ortiz–Teo’s cousin, and possibly the most annoying person on the planet. He’s easy going, laid back, disorganized, and spontaneous—the exact opposite
of Charlie (and Teo). But he knows what Teo wants, so she’s stuck with him.
Yet, the more time Charlie spends with J.D., the more she starts to wonder: Does she really know what, or rather who, she wants for Christmas?
Shani Petroff’s newest young adult comedy of errors, My New Crush Gave to Me, is the perfect read for those searching for some love and laughter along with their holiday spirit.
An Interview with Author Shani Petroff
Genre: YA contemporary (romantic comedy)
Shani Petroff is a writer living in New York City. She is the author of Romeo and What's Her Name, My New Crush Gave to Me, Airports, Exes, and Other Things I’m Over, and the “Bedeviled” series, which includes Daddy’s Little Angel; The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Dress; Careful What You Wish For; and Love Struck. She is the co-author of Ash. She also writes for television news programs and several other venues.
Tell us about your writing career. How long have you been writing?
Professionally, I started not too long after college. I worked at a TV news station (and still freelance there), where I would write and produce. I always loved books and wanted to do something more creative, so I took some fiction writing classes. I sold my first book, a middle grade novel, BEDEVILED: DADDY’S LITTLE ANGEL, which debuted in 2009.
How did you choose your genre?
I’ve worked on a variety of things, but when I decided to submit to Swoon Reads (an imprint of Feiwel & Friends), I thought a romantic comedy I had been thinking about would be a great fit!
Tell us a little about the books you’ve published. Series, or stand-alone?
I have a middle grade series called BEDEVILED. It’s about a girl who finds out her dad is the devil. There are four in the series. I co-wrote a dystopian. And I have a few romantic comedies with Swoon that are all stand alones.
The first, ROMEO & WHAT’S HER NAME, is about an unprepared understudy who has to take the stage with her secret crush. MY NEW CRUSH GAVE TO ME is about a girl who rigs a Secret Santa to win over the guy of her dreams. And AIRPORTS, EXES, AND OTHER THINGS I’M OVER (which comes out in May), is about a girl who gets stuck at the airport with her ex-boyfriend.
What inspires your work?
I love books, and I love to write, and it’s something I’ve always wanted to do. My father was a huge reader. He always had a book with him. He even pulled it out and would read a page or two at a red light (I do NOT recommend this). But I definitely grew up surrounded by books and a love for reading.
Who are your favorite authors, and what is it that draws you to them?
This is so hard. I have so many that I love. I grew up in awe (and still am) of Judy Blume, her books were so addictive to me. It seems every day I’m finding new authors and stories that I adore. I’m drawn to a wide variety of books – usually they have characters with strong voices that bring me in and make me not want to put the book down.
Are you working on a story now?
I am -- Finding Mr. Better-Than-You
A teen gets dumped right before senior year and is determined to find somebody even better than her ex!
Please, tell us more about it:
It’s supposed to come out in time for Galentine’s Day (a day to celebrate female friendship – a day coined by the character Leslie Knope on Parks and Recreation.) On first glance it may appear the book is about finding a guy, but the focus turns to strong friendships, funny moments -- and learning to love yourself.
That sounds awesome. I love the title too.
What do you anticipate your release date to be?
Any stories sitting on the back-burner?
I have a few ideas I’m playing around with but am not quite ready to talk about yet!
