Interview with the Author

Shani Petroff

Welcome to JB’s Bookworms. Congratulations on the coming release for Finding Mr. Better-Than-You. What is it about, and what inspired you to write it?
Thank you so much! Finding Mr. Better-Than-You is about a girl who gets dumped at the start of senior year and is determined to find someone better than her ex. But at its heart, it’s a book about friendship, finding yourself, and realizing that while being part of a couple can be amazing, you don’t have to be in one to be happy.

The idea was actually sparked by getting my heart crushed! The guy ended up dating someone else right away. It was painful, but it also sparked a book idea. I look back now and am grateful it all happened (although I wouldn’t have said that at the time). It led me to new places, people, love, and book ideas!

Is Finding Mr. Better than You, your first novel?
It’s actually my ninth!

Is it stand alone, or part of a series?
This one is a stand alone, but it is my fourth Swoon Reads book.

Tell us about your main character?
She is romantic who believes in true love and that life should be a rom com. She’s a loyal friend who knows what she wants, and throughout the book learns a lot about herself and what really makes her happy.

What is she looking for when she decides to find someone better?
She thinks she’s looking for something straight out of the movies, but throughout the book starts to learn more about herself and that finding a guy isn’t the answer to everything.

What do you hope others will learn from Finding Mr. Better-Than-You?
I hope it shows the power of friendship and how important it is to be there for one another. (I call this my friendship book.) Often in books like this we see the main character ending up with their true love, and I think that’s great (I’ve written many books like that and adore the concept), but I also think it’s important to show that you can still be happy and have an amazing high school experience without that too. There are all different kinds of love.

Where can we learn more about Finding Mr. Better-Than-You?
My website (which I’m in the process of updating) – and my publisher, Swoon Reads, has a great site where I’ve written several blog posts – And if you ask a bookseller or librarian they can find out more info on it too!

Are there any other books we can look forward to in the future?
I’m currently working on another book for Swoon Reads – a supernatural mystery.

Is there anything you want to add before we end this interview?
Thank you so much for interviewing me, and I hope you all enjoy the book! (I tell everyone it’s perfect for Valentine’s Day or when you want a fun friendship novel!)

Thanks so much for joining us. Good luck with Finding Mr. Better than You.
