yarn necklace and colorful frosted treats. But she finally decides to paint
Coco’s bowl gold. With some paint and LOTS of glitter, Zoya creates a gift Coco
is sure to love!
With Kai Robinson's vibrant,
full-color artwork and Valerie Bolling's engaging, easy-to-read text

What was your inspiration for writing your book?
I had the wonderful opportunity to
attend a session with Scholastic Acorn and Branches Executive Editor, Katie
Carella. During her presentation, I knew I wanted to read Acorn and Branches
books to see if I might be interested in writing a series. After exploring
these books, I set a goal to write a Scholastic Acorn series, which I did a few
months after meeting Katie.
I knew I needed to come up with an
idea that would interest young readers. Since most children love to create art
and adore animals, I decided to write about a girl and her dog who enjoy
engaging in art projects together.
Once I decided who my characters
would be I had to choose their names. Zoya’s name is a combination of my
nieces’ names, Zorah and Anyah. My younger niece, Anyah, loves art, so she’s
part of the inspiration for art-loving Zoya. I pictured a brown dog, so Coco
seemed like a good name for a pet-friend.
I hope this series will inspire
children to create their own art – with or without their pets. All children
should see themselves as artists, knowing that with their imagination and a
paintbrush, markers, or whatever they’d like, they can make something
spectacular.
