Book Tour - Hinder by Author Kristin Ping - Giveaways - Special Offer - Review

Hinder: A Bender’s Novel
The Guardian Of Monsters
Book One
Kristin Ping
Genre: NA Paranormal
Publisher: Fire Quill Publishing
Release Date: 15th May 2018

Ethan Sutcliff seems like a normal seventeen-year-old—at least that’s what he’s trying to portray. In a secret society run by the Supernaturals, Ethan is what witches call a Bender. Benders are Witches’ Guardians, who are able to control a witches’ ability, bend it, or move it away from harming humans. In Ethan’s case, he is able to bend the Earth element. But at the age of fifteen, he lost all connection to it, and the reasons behind it could only mean one of two things: His Wielder is either dead, or hiding out somewhere.

Alex Burgendorf has been living in her aunt’s locket for the past sixteen years with her mother—a Fire Wielder, and her father—a Water Wielder. For sixteen years, her parents vowed to protect her, and they have, as she is the last Earth wielding witch. However, time is running out. Alex must find her Bender, or the fate of the Supernaturals might be at stake.

My Review

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Warning: Possible Spoilers

Love, loss, hope, devastation, and betrayal. This book has it all. I will admit that in the beginning it reads more like a young adult novel, but due to a bit of foul language and sexual encounters that are not over the top or graphic, it crosses the line to new adult. There is also some violence, but that isn't usually over the top either. There is one scene where the violence gets a little intense, but the rest is tense, but not in your face. I will say that the manuscript needs a good edit, but I received this book prior to release for an honest review, so it might have still been in the final editing stages. I didn't ding the story, because I believe it still deserves 5 stars.

The characters are unique, with overprotective parents who mean well, but sometimes go too far. There is a hefty body guard that I can envision growling, and teenagers that don't always listen. The main character has an Aunt who is a fun and sexy shifter. Our male main character is gorgeous, ultra strong, and a good guy, but he still makes lots of mistakes, and our heroine is gorgeous, smart, and not always what she seems. Many of the other characters aren't what they seem at first glance, leaving surprises, both good and bad.

There is some description, but much is left to the imagination where the environment is concerned, but characters are clearly defined. I believe this is a series, and there are issues that could easily be pursued in more books, but this book could be read as stand alone. But, I think it will make you want to read the rest of the series. Hinder is a fun and interesting read.

Singles stumbling toward fulfillment in odyssey of sex, love and parenting

Love and Other Hazards is a novel about urban singles stumbling toward fulfillment in an odyssey of sex, love, and parenting.

Glenda Fieldston is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art with her seven-year-old daughter, Astrid, when Eugene Lerman comes walking by with his eight-year-old daughter, Meredith, a schoolmate of Astrid’s. The families spot each other, Glenda and Eugene engage in long-range cursory assessments, and then they go their separate ways.

But not for long. Glenda and Eugene cross paths professionally soon after, and circumstances at work bring them into close association. So begins a friendship fraught with complications. Glenda’s independence is self-imposed and fierce. Eugene’s was foisted on him by a wife who left him. Although Glenda’s and Eugene’s personal demons are incompatible, their longings are, confoundedly, in harmony. Their cautious friendship is further inhibited by past and present relationships, and it remains to be seen if they can break out of their set ways to make a break for uncharted love.

Erika’s spent her entire post-graduate career searching for it. The elusive dragon stronghold her archaeologist professors scoffed at as being only a myth. Now she has the perfect team and has led them into the deepest reaches of the Sumatran jungle. But when the seven intrepid explorers pass through the doors, they’re barely prepared for the conflict of lust versus logic they’re faced with on the inside. Being Alpha
Aileen Erin
(Alpha Girl #7)
Published by: Ink Monster LLC

Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult

For the first time since Tessa met Dastien, life is quiet. The evil witch, Luciana, is six glorious feet under, St. Ailbe’s is closed due to human trespassers, and people are finally getting used to the fact that supernaturals exist in the world. It seems like the perfect time for a honeymoon.

Tessa and Dastien’s trip to the Caribbean is turning out to be the honeymoon that fantasies are made of—sunset cruises, long walks on the beach, and every romantic cliché you can imagine. She couldn’t be happier. So, when a local man turns up inexplicably dead on the beach, Tessa brushes it off. Not every bad thing that happens in the world is a supernatural mystery to be solved. And when Sebastian—one of the Council of Seven Alphas who rule all the werewolves—appears on the island, she thinks it must be a coincidence. Everyone needs a break now and then. Even council members. Right? Besides, Tessa is beyond determined to not let anything get in the way of her romantic vacation.

But when Dastien goes missing, the honeymoon is most definitely over. Tessa can’t ignore the signs anymore. Something huge is going on. And whoever messed with Tessa’s mate is in for a rude awakening. Because if there’s one thing fighting rogue witches and werewolves has taught her, it’s how to be Alpha.

YA Bound Book Blitz: Karina's Silver Shoes by Denise Marques Leitao - Excerpt - Giveaway

Karina's Silver Shoes by
Denise Marques Leitao
Genre: YA Fantasy
Release Date: September 18th 2017

She’s got the fate of a kingdom in her hands—or rather, in her shoes.

14-year old Karina is not sure what she wants, but she knows what she’s found: fascinating silver shoes. Fascinating, dangerous, and potentially evil. On the upside, they do bring cool visitors.

When two princesses ask her to go to Whyland, a kingdom in a parallel dimension, to destroy the shoes, of course Karina accepts. Who would refuse a free trip to an alternate world?

Advised by a wise master, threatened by a beautiful stepmother, Karina goes on a journey with a princess to defeat a powerful witch. But Whyland is nothing like she expected. Karina finds herself stuck in a kingdom she doesn’t understand, with no clue on who to trust. Before saving anyone, she’d better save herself—if she figures out how.

From Brazilian / Canadian writer Denise Marques Leitao comes a teen parody of fantasy and fairy-tale tropes with many female characters, friendships between girls and women, and some subtle romance. If you like to read about strong girls and women, you’ve found your book.

Excerpt

Slowly, the sense of reality came back to Karina. Sparkly dust. Yeah, that was from blinking or whatever. Grant a wish. Was Karina still at the age of believing in fairy tales? She was a normal, logical person. Most fairy tales she knew were from a time when she had no word on the kind of entertainment assigned to her. How could she have fallen for such crap? Thankfully she didn’t sell the shoes for an empty promise. Wait. Did the woman have the nerve to steal the shoes right under her nose? Karina hurried to the closet and picked up her purse. The shoes were still there. What had this visit been all about then? Maybe Karina was just tired and seeing things, but what troubled her most was not having visions but believing what they said. Instead of watching a movie, she put on her pajamas, turned off all the lights and lay on her bed. If she was going to believe in fairy tales, she’d better sleep before nine.

While midway on her journey between being awake and asleep, Karina heard what seemed to be something heavy falling in her bedroom. The sound would have startled her, had she not had enough of weird stuff and decided just to convince herself she was dreaming. Then she heard girls’ voices:

“Ouch.”

“Careful.”

“You’re the one who needs to be careful. You fell over me.”

“What can I do? It’s all dark in here. I didn’t think it’d be like that.”

“Ayanna, you weren’t even supposed to come. We need lights.”

“We can try to find them.”

“No, I’ll take care of that.”

“Cayla, you’re not supposed to!”

“Shhh. Nobody will know about it.”

“Wow! That’s so cool. Look, you broke something. Do you think you can fix it?”

“You mean you broke it. We’re not supposed to.”

“I wanna see it.”

“All right. I’ll try.”

At this point, Karina had the notion that she was awake and the voices were really in her bedroom. Her eyes were still closed in the hopes the voices would fade away on their own, but instead, they only got clearer and more real, to a point she could no longer hold her curiosity and had to look. She opened her eyes just enough to see without being noticed. A strange, orange glow illuminated the room. Two teenage girls were there, reminding her of the woman she had previously seen, especially the older one, but dressed in very simple green and orange dresses. The oldest girl passed her hands over Karina’s study lamp, which seemed to have been broken.

The younger girl laughed. “I don’t think you can do it. Can I try it?”

“Break something of your own.”

“Didn’t you say I was the one who broke it?”

This was getting too much. One thing was arguing in her room, but starting to break things, no. Karina sat up. “Hey, what are you doing here?”

Excerpt

My mother insisted on purchasing two of the largest suitcases possible, Louis Vuitton rolling cases in an easily recognizable and slightly obnoxious shade of bright pink. She’d spent more on my luggage than some people did on a car, and they were heavy. I’d loaded them up with my precious books and far too many pairs of shoes before I left. The porter stumbled, losing his grip on the first suitcase, and nearly fell.
I rushed to help, but someone else beat me to it, a tall, mountain of a man. I stopped in my tracks and stared. I may have been drooling. He was, for lack of a better word, beautiful.
Broad chest. Long legs. Strong, muscular arms. Golden, glowing skin. Chestnut hair flowing in riotous curls around his face and down to his shoulders. Eyes in a warm shade of brown. The edge of a tattoo peeking out from under the sleeve of his shirt.
Something unexpected curled in my chest. Was it…lust? I hadn’t felt it in so long I almost didn’t recognize it. But I wasn’t the only person staring at the bronzed god in from of me.
“Heavens to Betsy,” said Hilary under her breath. “I’ve never seen anything so pretty this close up.”
He was pretty, and he was also pissed off, most likely at the owner of the two enormous and ridiculously heavy pink suitcases. Me.

Book Blitz: A Pain Less Ordinary by L. V. Pires

A Pain Less Ordinary
by L.V. Pires
Genre: YA
Release Date: September 2017

Summary:

Becca's life is anything but ordinary.

At fifteen, she's already experienced her share of pain. With a mom who drinks too much, a revolving door of father figures, and struggles at school, Becca wonders if she'll ever have a chance at a normal life. The only thing that keeps her sane is her little sister, Chloe; that is, until her mother's breakdown leads to her sister's disappearance.

A PAIN LESS ORDINARY follows Becca as she figures out life on her own while searching for her family and her new role in the world.

In this powerfully moving novel, L.V. Pires explores Becca's struggle with abandonment, drug abuse, homelessness, relationships, and how pain connects her to others.

Excerpt

It takes us a good ten minutes to back out of the driveway. Mom yells at me a few times to hurry up. My pulse speeds up. A throbbing pain pluses at my temple. There’s a kid in the street. How am I supposed to not hit him? I scream out and slam on the breaks.

Mom taps at the window, ignoring I just nearly killed someone. She drinks the clear liquid from her water bottle. I bite back tears.

I go about a half a mile from the house, speeding to a cool fifteen miles an hour, so we’re in a smooth glide, but keep my foot hovering over the brake sure we’re going to collide with a tree, fender, or small child any moment. Finally, the light turns yellow and I slam my foot down on the brake bringing the tires to a screech.

“Cut it out,” Mom says.

Right as I’m about to get the courage to tell her I don’t know what I’m doing, she moans as if I just ran over her foot.

I follow her gaze straight and suck in a breath. Arthur pushes the stroller ahead of us in the pedestrian lane. I can’t believe it. He’s got the phoniest smile on his face. He looks over, directly into our car. His plastic expression cracks. Mom’s face turns red. Her eyes fix on Chloe.

“Mom?” I try to redirect her. The light turns green.

Mom’s eyes are filling with rage. She watches him scurry to the sidewalk.

The car behind us honks.

“We have to go,” I say, gently, releasing the brake.

“Don’t move,” she says, cold and serious.

I slam down on the brake again.

She unbuckles her seatbelt and flings open the car door.

“Mom!” I yell, but it’s too late.

Summary:

Duty and prophecy get in the way of everything.
All I ever wanted to do was read my books, play my sports, and help people. Life and prophecy had other things in mind.
Helping people is what I do; as an empath and semi-frequent telepath, I can easily sense and understand people's needs and emotions. Sometimes even before they do. Being able to read everyone’s thoughts and feelings all the time can drive me crazy with anxiety, but that moment when I can finally make someone’s life better makes everything worth it.
Unfortunately, I’m also the next in line to rule the galaxy, I’m the only diplomat most planets will listen to, assassins try to kill me on an annoyingly regular basis, and a much-vaunted Prophecy has decreed that I’m going to die. Oh, and someone blew up my home planet.
Kind of a lot to deal with, right?
Too bad I just got another problem: a big, irritating, overbearing bodyguard with serious anger management issues.

And I think I’m falling for him.

Joined dream cast

Oh, good question. That’s a hard one (although I suppose the easy questions aren’t much fun, are they?). A part of me would prefer newer actors, because I like the lack of stigma that comes with an unknown. Nevertheless…

Perseus: I kind of had Jason Momoa in mind when I was picturing Perseus, and I love the actor’s sense of humor off stage. He’d be so fantastic. I would also love Clive Standen.

Andromeda: This is a hard one, since being short is oddly important, but I loved AnnaSophia Robb in Bridge to Terabithia. I think she’d be old enough now.

Kos: Someone like Antonio Cupo or Kit Harington, who manage to be dark, handsome, and yet utterly confusing. They have a knack for looking at you like they already know everything but are just asking to make you squirm.

Synie: Halle Berry or Jennifer Garner. For me, how Synie looks is far less important than the kind of persona the actress herself exudes. Jennifer Garner and Halle Berry are both women who have done decades of action fighting, and the even temperament and level of experience they bring to their roles on screen is the kind of actress I’d like to see. I could also see Zoe Saldana being an incredible choice.

Clee: Someone like Emily Browning or Margot Robbie would be fabulous. They are both visual chameleons, can look both insane and tempered, and have the ability to look like she’s thinking about beating up a room full of people- because she could, if she wanted to.

Gi: Gi needs to be a total mischief maker. I would love to see someone like Neil Patrick Harris in this part; he has the deadpan sense of humor down so well that it would practically be typecasting, but still.

Yalan: Jensen Ackles or Travis Fimmel. Both are badass, beautiful, and play the part of the mean guy quite perfectly when they need to.

For the rest of the Mousai, I would do exactly what the director for Wonder Woman did and hire athletes. Olympic fencers, martial arts champions, or archers. I loved seeing such strong, real-world women in that movie, and it reinforced so much of how I had always envisioned the Mousai while writing them. I’d also go to the casting director for the TV show Vikings and ask for their lists, because the women on that show are outstanding. Beautiful, strong, and beautiful because they’re strong. And I would love to see anything with Katheryn Winnick or Gal Gadot!

Publication Date: Aug. 16th, 2017
Hosted by: Lady Amber’s Reviews & PR

He swore to end her.

All Magnus had to do was pick up a package and get his brother’s child back. A simple task that any Caster worth his salt could have done in his sleep, except nothing had been that simple for him in years.

For centuries, Magnus relished in the slaughter and annihilation of the demon race. Ridding the world — and hell — of every last one was an oath he was determined to keep. But Magnus had his own gnawing beasts devouring his soul with memories of a past he was powerless to change.

Zara was something else. She was beautiful and powerful, and the very definition of evil. Yet everything about her called to him, beckoned him to forget his nightmares and vengeance. She could fix everything if he would just submit, but she was the very thing who had ruined him in the first place and Magnus submitted to no one.

But Zara proves to be much more than just the source of his agony. She’s a key to ending the war, a power that can tilt the scales and save them all, or will she be the reason he loses everything?

She may end him first.

Excerpt

“You’re awake.” He closed the distance to the wagon in ten powerful strides.
In the pale gold of dawn, there was no missing the illumination of all the things he’d missed in the dark, like just how silver her hair really was, how absolutely flawless her skin was, and her face … there were no words to properly describe its utter perfection. Sitting atop a crate, clutching a blanket about her shoulders, she could have been an ivory statue, something sculpted straight from his very fantasies. Even her wide, violet eyes with their thick sweep of lashes were mesmerizing. They glimmered in the rising light, polished gems embedded on a landscape of freshly fallen snow. He had never seen eyes like hers. He couldn’t stop staring.
She never spoke. She didn’t even move. But her gaze was a steady force, dogging his every movement with wary curiosity.
“What’s your name?” He put force behind the question, authority, but there was a catch in his chest that he prayed only he caught.
She said nothing, but there was a defiant quirk of her chin that narrowed her eyes. It was the regal gesture of a queen, of someone who feared nothing.
“She hasn’t spoken since she woke up.” Reggie moved to stand at Magnus’s side. “I’m not sure if it’s because she can’t, or won’t, or maybe she doesn’t understand.”
No. There was intelligence in her eyes. There was arrogance and hatred, and anger. She understood. But she was a prisoner and they were the ones responsible for her current captivity. To her, they were the enemy and she would give them nothing. Something about that entertained him.
“She understands.” Magnus turned away and made his way to the front of the wagon. He paused to peer down at Dante. “Stay with her. She makes one false move, eat her.”
He glanced back just in time to see the spark of rage in those pale lavender eyes, see the flare of her nostrils and the muscles flex against the delicate line of her jaw. Her outrage prickled an amusement in him that he had to turn away to keep her from seeing.
