⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Anyone who knows me knows I do my best to avoid spoilers.
Although I’m a freak of nature and prefer to know a little about a story going
in, I know most people do not. At any rate, accidents happen, so continue at your
own risk.
The setting is Nazi Germany. The beginning of Hitler’s reign,
and the German people are being taught that Jews are a inferior race. Those who
disagree with these thoughts can face terrible consequences.
I’ve always loved historical fiction, and Nancy McDonald did
an excellent job with this one. I felt like I was at the main character’s home,
going to school, even joining her at the train station. Part of this was due to
the simple ‘to-the-point’ descriptions. I love stories that pull me in and descriptions
aren’t overwhelmingly long, pulling me out of the story. The other reason is the
characterization is written in a way that makes her people come alive on the
page.
Gerhard is a father who dotes on his children.
Amelie is our main character, a young teenage girl who is
always watching, thinking of, and taking care of her little sister.
Gigi is the little sister who remains naïve because others are
looking out for her.
Kurt and Elke are teenagers and friends who fall into the lies
of a new corrupt and cruel government.
Eva is the wicked stepmother.
The story has a solid beginning, middle and end. Amelie and
Gigi live with their widowed Father. They face many changes, both at home and
in school. The tension grows slowly, but continually as the story moves
forward. I didn’t notice it until I found myself holding my breath.
To say more would give too much away.
At the end of the book, Nancy McDonald explained the time-period
and the historical people involved. I loved this. Of course, this is fiction but
some of the people in the story really did exist. She also added questions at
the end of the book, so we can learn more. I liked that too.
The bottom line is that while I love the story, it might be a little tense for some young people, so keep that in mind. But there is no cussing or sexual activity.
