Author Interview with Brad Mason,
author of CHARLIE CHALOOSY IS
OFTEN QUITE CHOOSY
Does Charlie Chaloosy have an inspiration for the
character?
I’d like to think that there is a little bit of Charlie in all of us because we all sometimes lack confidence to get off of the sidelines and into the game. Charlie was in a rut of sameness due to his anxiety about trying new things. This theme has been explored before — think Green Eggs and Ham— but instead of an odd character “Sam,” Charlie is a relatable little boy.
I do have a grandchild who has struggled with anxiety related to trying new things but when he does there are great feelings of growth and accomplishment. I want children and caring adults to have this book and others that will follow in the series as tools in their respective tool boxes to discuss childhood challenges. I want all children to feel the exhilaration of success as they try and conquer new things.
I read in your bio that you have been an educator for 30+
years and this is your first book, why now?
There were a few happenstances that occurred along the way that accelerated this process, but as I near the end of my professional career, my thoughts were always on, “what’s next?” Another accelerator is the addition of six grandchildren over the last 4-½ years. I was reintroduced to bedtime stories and children’s literature through them, so I decided to dive in!
So, do I hear you say that this isn’t the last we will
hear from Charlie?
It is not the last you will hear from Charlie. As I created him in my mind, I saw Charlie as a recurring character in a book series. This book is the first of many more to come. Some additional books are already largely written and other ideas already have working titles. Therefore, Charlie and I will be very busy in the years to come.
The addition of two pages in the back of the book for
young readers to write and draw so they can add to the story is unique, where
did that idea come from?
I just made it up. I wanted Charlie to inspire children to be encouraged to grow and try new things just as Charlie did in the stories. I thought that it would be a great idea to allow them to turn my book into their own keepsake of something new they would like to try. It creates the opportunity for a little “junior action step” that I hope leads to success and confidence for children.
My hope is for Charlie to be loved by the children who meet him in the books I write!
