An Interview with Author Lorilyn Roberts

Welcome Ms Roberts. Thank you for being with us today.

Tell us about your writing career. How long have you been writing?

Seventh Dimension – The Prescience is my tenth book. My first book was published in 2005.

How did you choose your genre?

I actually write in multiple genres—children’s picture books, YA, cookbooks, memoir, fiction, and nonfiction. It just depends on what God puts on my heart.

Tell us a little about the books you’ve published. Series or stand-alone?

The Seventh Dimension Series is my latest writing project. The first book Seventh Dimension – The Door was written as my thesis book for my Masters in Creative Writing. I had a lot of good feedback from readers and decided to make it into a series. The Door – which is free on Kindle and Nook, was written as a stand-alone. The rest of the books build on each other although it is possible to read them out of order and still follow the story. I fill readers in on what they missed if they haven’t read earlier books.

What inspires your work?

I am inspired by the Holy Spirit to write what He gives me to write. I remember many years ago when I was just starting out writing, I was at a writer’s conference, and the speaker said, “Don’t ever say when you submit your work to a publisher, ‘God told me to write this.’”

Well, that never sat well with me. I learned later that I am an Indy author at heart because I tend to “break” many of the rules. I unabashedly give my Lord and Savior all the glory and all the credit for everything I write. That sets the bar very high because I am writing for an audience of one. My books must be the absolute best I can make them—best story, best cover, best editing, no sex, no foul language, no drugs, minimal violence, and every word, concept, and idea must line up with Biblical principles.

I write what I wish I could have read when I was young. I write words of truth about strong characters that battle evil, powers of darkness, fallen angels, and demons;  and emotions that drive us crazy—sinful desires like worry, fear, selfishness, hate, lust, greed, and depression, just to name a few. My desire is to reach readers’ hearts and give them nuggets of truth, stirring them to question, “What do I believe?”

I am saddened by the mediocre books teens read. They deserve better. They deserve to be challenged. They deserve to be enlightened. They deserve to be given the highest quality of books that will inspire them to read more, drink in God’s love, and reach their God-given potential. I was truly blessed as a child and teen by all the wonderful books I read. I only wish I had known there were also books by Christian authors.

Who are your favorite authors and what is it that draws you to them?

Your last question is a great segue into this one. JRR Tolkien, CS Lewis, Randy Alcorn, Hannah Hurnard, and John Bunyan would be some of my favorite Christian fantasy authors. Sadly, I read nothing by them until I was an adult. But I was introduced to Christian fantasy by Madeleine L’Engle in A Wrinkle in Time. It was Randy Alcorn who showed me protagonists can struggle with their faith, and controversial subjects like abortion and Down’s syndrome need not be shunned. I also discovered that overtly Christian themes could bring realism to fantasy in a way no other genres could. Later I read This Present Darkness and Piercing the Darkness by Frank Peretti, and my understanding of spiritual warfare was never the same.

In my opinion, these authors and others like them possess an artistic genius that can’t be fully appreciated here. God gave these writers insights beyond human understanding. Whether recognized or not, authors have tremendous ability to influence and inspire change. If only more authors would speak eternal truths, we could make this world a better place
